The Suicide Awareness Showdown celebrates life. We want to celebrate people who have struggled with mental health concerns and who may have wanted to give up on life, but who were able to overcome those feelings of desperation and despair and chose to live. We are responding to those brave souls who struggle every day to turn away from the internal and external negative noises and awkward judgmental stares. Our goal is to assist such individuals to retreat from their own internal pain. Thoreau said, “For every thousand hacking at the leaves of evil, there is one striking at the root.” At Live Achieve Believe, Inc. (LAB), we strive to influence by striking at the root of mental health concerns and suicide that are such devastating occurrences in society today.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States and is a growing public health concern (CDC, 2019). We believe these statistics require an intervention. We want to capture and remove hopelessness and replace it with a strong sense of self through the process of the Suicide Awareness Showdown.
The Suicide Awareness Showdown seeks to change the way people look at the choice of life and death. We believe that recognizing and developing one character trait at a time has the capacity to build character, and that in turn, a newfound and stronger self-worth will emerge, creating a profound purpose and presence in life after all.
The Suicide Awareness Showdown is a four-part interactive event structured into the form of a letter. Each of the four events correlates with a paragraph of the letter, and in each event, we pose a different question that encourages participants to go through an internal journey. The four questions asked are:
- Where have you been?
- Where are you now?
- Who are you?
- Where are you going?
Our long-term desire is to support individuals through schools and through organizations that work tirelessly to help those who desire to end their lives. We intend to do this through education and through resources that, many times, are already in place. Finally, we want to assist families who are seeking support for their loved ones who struggle with mental health concerns and thoughts of suicide.
